September 12th Daily Devotion
A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
DON’T BORROW TROUBLE
Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
The Psalmist wrote, “This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) In today’s devotional verse Jesus says in essence today is God’s gift to you. Whatever He gives you He intends for your good. Rejoice and celebrate today!
There is no need to even think about tomorrow because as God has created today, it is He who is in charge of tomorrow. As an earthly Father will not give His child a scorpion so God your Heavenly Father intends to provide today what you will need to support your body and life. As you put today into God’s hands in prayer ask Him to provide for your tomorrow.
Pagans and unbelievers worry about tomorrow because they have no knowledge of or at least no faith in God. They are unable to comprehend that God created all that exists and what God has created is good. Your God promises to continue to be the God of this world having all under His control.
In yesterday’s devotion you read Jesus’ exhortation, “do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ . . . your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” (Matthew 6:31-32) Instead of worrying about these things Jesus has taught you to pray to your heavenly Father, “ . . . give us this day our daily bread. . .”
Jesus says, to worry is to borrow trouble. Your worry is telling God that you do not trust Him and His promises. Because you do not trust Him you must “worry,” that is, take charge of tomorrow yourself. But Jesus says, instead of worrying, pray to your heavenly Father, “ . . . Thy will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.” How foolish to worry about tomorrow when your knowledge is so limited. Instead, trust in God who knows everything and has all power to do whatever is necessary.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me faith to trust you to provide all I need for today and depend on You to take care of my tomorrow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I leave all things to God’s direction;
He loves me both in joy and woe.
His will is good, sure His affection;
His tender love is true, I know.
My fortress and my rock is He:
What pleases God, that pleases me.
God knows what must be done to save me;
His love for me will never cease.
Upon His hands He did engrave me
With purest gold of loving grace.
His will supreme must ever be:
What pleases God, that pleases me.
My God desires the soul’s salvation;
My soul He too, desires to save.
Therefore with Christian resignation
All earthly troubles I will brave.
His will be done eternally;
What pleases God, that pleases me.
My God has all things in His keeping;
He is the ever faithful friend.
He gives me laughter after weeping,
And all His ways in blessings end.
His love endures eternally:
What pleases Gd, that pleases me.
