A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND
Matthew 15:12-14 “Then the disciples came to Him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
You would be foolish if your car was not operating properly and you asked me what was wrong with it. I am probably one of the least mechanical persons on earth. My trying to help you would be like today’s devotional title, The Blind Leading the Blind. Today’s devotional verses makes me think of the proverb, “The blind leading the blind.” This proverb simply refers to a person attempting to assist another person when neither of them know what they are doing.
The context of Matthew 15:12-15 continues Jesus addressing the advice and counsel the Pharisees gave. Jesus, who did know absolute truth, corrected the teaching of the Pharisees, who did not. Jesus pointed out that the Pharisees did not know what they were talking about. They were giving incorrect spiritual guidance. They were, Jesus said, “The blind leading the blind.”
There are many in the world today giving advice and counsel by the bushel baskets full. They write books, go on talk shows, start churches, and preach sermons. So many of them do not know the pure Gospel given by Jesus that is God’s only power for salvation. Instead, they proclaim the necessity to live holy and pure lives not recognizing the impossibility of what they tell people to do.
There is only one message of salvation. Jesus is the only source from whom to receive God’s forgiveness, eternal life, and salvation. God’s word is “a lamp” that provides necessary light to show the path of righteousness. Peace and joy come only from God through His Son Jesus. Jesus taught, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know Me, you will know My Father as well. . . “ (John 14:6-7)
Prayer: Enable me, O Lord, to know have a command of Your Word to share with those with whom I come in contact that I am able to speak and write the Gospel to point them to You through Jesus. In His holy name. Amen.
Glorious things of You are spoke, Zion, city of our God;
He whose word cannot be broken Formed you for His own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded What can shake your sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surrounded, You may smile at all your foes.
See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love,
Well supply your sons and daughters And all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river Ever will their thirst assuage?
Grace, which like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age.
Round each habitation hov’ring, See the cloud and fire appear
For a glory and a cov’ring, Showing that the Lord is near.
Thus deriving from their banner Light by night and shade by day,
Safe they feed upon the manna Which God gives them on their way.
Savior, since of Zion’s city I through grace a member am,
Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Your name.
Fading are the world’s vain pleasures, All their boasted pomp and show;
Solid joys and lasting treasures None but Zion’s children know.
