A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON ACTS
INTRODUCTION
Today begins a series of devotions based upon the book or Acts. St. Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke, is the author of this book as well. The book of Luke is His eyewitness account of the spread of the Gospel immediately after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.
In Acts Luke continues the narrative of God sending Jesus into the world as its Savior. In some ways it is a history of the rapid spread of the gospel and those who were the leading missionaries such as St. Peter and St. Paul, St. John, Barnabus and others. God’s promise of forgiveness and everlasting life through Jesus Christ is again the central theme found in this book written by Luke.
Acts 1:1 says that Theophilus is the original recipient of Luke’s book. Not a lot is known about this man other than he must have been of importance in that Luke also mentioned him in his gospel. (Luke 1:1-4) It appears Luke is writing to this man in an effort to prove to him Jesus is truly the promised Messiah of the Old Testament who came to earth to live, die on Calvary’s cross, and be resurrected three days after His burial in Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb. Of course, Luke wrote under inspiration and revelation of the Holy Spirit for your benefit as well.
The book of Acts records the manner in which God worked through the power of His Word, both orally and in writing, to give the whole world the knowledge of His plan of salvation for all people. Much of the book focuses upon the calling of Saul through His miraculous conversion on the road of Damascus and the subsequent mission work conducted by Him throughout much of the Roman empire.
It is through this same gospel the Holy Spirit continues to work to in the hearts of those who receive it to create faith in Jesus. It is this faith that accepts God’s gift of eternal life and salvation. Devotions from the book of Acts will be a blessing to you in your personal spiritual journey.
Prayer: Bless me with a strengthened faith, O Lord, through inspired words of Luke found in the Book of Acts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son
And bring to naught all He has done.
Lord Jesus Christ, Your pow’r make known,
For You are Lord of lords alone;
Defend Your holy Church that we
May sing Your praise eternally.
O Comforter of priceless worth,
Send peace and unity on earth;
Support us in our final strife
And lead us out of death to life.
