A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

TO THE VERY END OF THE AGE

Matthew 28:20 “. . . surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

“To the very end of the age” Jesus promises He will be present, among His people, shepherding, and saving. As yesterday’s devotion focused upon, this means Jesus will be present among the people of this world for as long as this world exists. Think what your life would be like without Jesus. With Jesus always present, you know God’s love is always active in your heart and life. You are assured your prayers are heard by your heavenly Father because Jesus is sitting at His right hand taking your prayers to Him and asking Him to act on what you pray.

Secondly, “To the very end of the age” is a message that this world will at some time in the future come to an end. Matthew 24:36 tells us that no one knows when that day, hour, and second will come. 1 Thessalonians 5:2 says that it “will come like a thief in the night.” Luke 21:25-26 says that there will be signs, especially in nature, indicating that day is coming. And, Revelation 21 says there will be significant natural disasters in number and severity.

Jesus told a parable of the wise and foolish virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) that encourages you to always be prepared for the last day, end of time, or judgement day (popular term for the last day.) The reason for constant preparedness is you won’t know when it will come.

Whether for you the last day is the day the Lord calls you home to Him or the actual last day, it will come. For you, a believer in Jesus, it will be a blessed day because you will be with the Lord where “. . . God Himself will be with (you) and be (your) God. ‘He will wipe every tear from (your) eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:2-3)

Prayer: Come Lord Jesus, come quickly! Amen.

Christ is surely coming
Bringing His reward,
Alpha and Omega,
First and Last and Lord;
Root and Stem of David,
Brilliant Morning Star;
Meet your Judge and Savior,
Nations near and far!

See the holy city!
There they enter in,
All by Christ made holy,
Washed from ev’ry sin:
Thirsty ones, desiring
All He loves to give,
Come for living water,
Freely drink, and live!

Grace be with God’s people!
Praise His holy name!
Father, Son, and Spirit,
Evermore the same;
Hear the certain promise
From the eternal home;
“Surely I come quickly!
Come, Lord Jesus, come!”
