A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
SOME DOUBTED
Matthew 28:16-17 “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.”
Bible scholars debate who was present at the time of today’s devotional verses. While the text says “then the eleven disciples went to Galilee. . .” some believe that the 500 disciples mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:6 were also present. Whichever it was, some of the followers of Jesus continued to struggle with all that had happened since His death on Calvary and resurrection three days later.
It is known that by the time of today’s verses Jesus had appeared to the ten (Thomas was not present) who were behind locked doors in the upper room. He appeared a week later when Thomas was present. We know that after His first appearance to the disciples, when told of it, Thomas had said “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” (John 20:25) We know when Thomas saw Jesus the next week, Jesus offered His hands and side to Thomas and Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God.” (John 20:28)
Jesus comes to you in your moments of doubt. No, He does not come physically extending His hands and side for you to touch. He comes, however, through the Gospel. He even sends the Holy Spirit to accompany His coming. The Holy Spirit calls you to faith in Jesus, your resurrected Lord and Savior, gives you faith to believe in Jesus and then keeps you in that faith to life everlasting.
Prayer: Draw me to You, dear Jesus, so I believe You are my resurrected Lord and Savior. Amen.
Draw us to Thee,
For then shall we
Walk in Thy steps forever
And hasten on
Where Thou art gone
To be with Thee, dear Savior.
Draw us to Thee,
Lord, lovingly;
Let us depart with gladness
That we may be
Forever free
From sorrow, grief, and sadness.
Draw us to Thee;
O grant that we
May walk the road to heaven!
Direct our way
Lest we should stray
And from Thy paths be driven.
Draw us to Thee
That also we
Thy heav’nly bliss inherit
And ever dwell
Where sin and hell
No more can vex our spirit.
Draw us to Thee
Unceasingly,
Into Thy kingdom take us;
Let us fore’er
Thy glory share,
Thy saints and join heirs make us.
