A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
SEEING IS BELIEVING
Matthew 28:8-10 “So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to Him, clasped His feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see Me.”
With the advent of modern forensics, an eye witness is not as critical for a prosecuting attorney’s case as it once was. Prior to DNA, crime laboratories, and the like, an eye witness to a crime usually locked up the prosecutor’s case.
After the women were told by the angel that Jesus was risen, they quickly left the tomb to go back to tell the other followers of Jesus the angel’s message. As excited as they were, can you imagine their reaction when Jesus stopped them in their tracks and revealed Himself to them?
With Jesus’ appearance to them they no longer had to rely upon the angel’s message. Jesus had come to them in person. They saw Him with their eyes and “clasped His feet” with their own hands. Jesus was risen from the grave. He was alive!
Jesus told them to go to His disciples and direct them to go to Galilee where they would see Him with their own eyes. Today’s devotional verses echo the old saying, “Seeing is believing.” The women saw. They believed. The disciples would soon see and they too would believe. Through the eyes of the women and the disciples you also see Jesus, your resurrected Lord and Savior.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me faith to believe the eye witness accounts of the women and Jesus’ disciples that He is my living Lord and Savior. In His holy name. Amen.
He (Jesus) lives to silence all my fears;
He lives to wipe away my tears;
He lives to calm my troubled heart;
He lives all blessings to impart.
He lives, my kind, wise, heav’nly friend;
He lives and loves me to the end;
He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing;
He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.
He lives and grants me daily breath;
He lives, and I shall conquer death;
He lives my mansion to prepare;
He lives to bring me safely there.
He lives, all glory to His name!
He lives, my Jesus, still the same;
Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives;
I know that my Redeemer lives.
