A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

CARED FOR HIS NEEDS

Matthew 27:55-56 “Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for His needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.”

The women found in the Gospel’s cared for Jesus’ needs. Martha fed Jesus and His disciples. Remember when Jesus was in her home and she was franticly preparing a meal to serve to Jesus and His disciples. She loved Jesus and ministered to Him with her talent as a hostess and cook.

Mary, the sister of Martha, sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to Him teach. Although her sister criticized her for not assisting in feeding Jesus and His disciples, she was the one who anointed his feet with wetted His feet with her tears and anointed them with costly perfume. Jesus said this was in preparation for His death and burial.

Jesus cast seven demons out of Mary Magdalene. She in turn followed Jesus and provided Him and His disciples with financial support. She sat at Calvary’s cross with other women to support Him in His most crucial time of ministry.

These faithful women sat at the cross of Jesus and watched Him slowly die. And we know that early Easter morning they went to His tomb to complete the burial process of Jesus’ body only to be dumbfounded in finding His grave empty. At that moment they were the first to hear the Angel’s announcement “He is not here, He is risen!”

They became the first proclaimers of Jesus’ resurrection by telling His disciples who were hiding behind locked doors. To this very day women of faith continue to meet the needs of the body of Christ. And, He has said of them and their ministry, “Whatever you have done to the least of these. . .you have done it unto Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Prayer: Guide me, Lord Jesus, in ministering in Your holy name and for Your sake. Amen.

We praise You, O God, our Redeemer, Creator;
In grateful devotion our tribute we bring.
We lay it before You, we kneel and adore You;
We bless Your holy name, glad praises we sing.

We worship You, God of our fathers, we bless You;
Through trial and tempest our guide You have been.
When perils o’ertake us, You will not forsake us,
And with Your help, O Lord, our struggles we win.

With voices united our praises we offer
And gladly our songs of thanksgiving we raise.
With You, Lord, beside us, Your strong arm will guide us.
To You, our great Redeemer, forever be praise!
