January 14th Daily Devotion
A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
YOU LIVE IN TWO KINGDOMS
Matthew 22:21 (Read Matthew 22:15-22) “. . . give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Citizenship is a significant issue today. Birthright is under political discussion in this country because of the perceived high value there is in being a citizen of the United States. No one who has this citizenship should take it lightly.
Citizenship in God’s kingdom is of even greater importance. Being a citizen of the United States is only for a matter of a few decades. Citizenship in God’s kingdom is for eternity. Knowing this, it is of even greater value and should be honored at all times.
The Jewish leaders used the issue of citizenship to try to trap Jesus into an untenable position. They asked Him if taxes should be paid to Rome? Those taxes were hated by the Jews. What was Jesus to say? Jesus’ answer was, “. . . give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Jesus’ point in this parable is you live under the authority of the rulers of two kingdoms, not one. You are to obey and give allegiance to the governing authorities of the nation in which you live (4th Commandment) and at the same time give allegiance to God who reigns over the Kingdom of Heaven. As a Christian you have both political and spiritual responsibilities.
Prayer: Lord, help me to honor and respect all who You have given authority over me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Before You, Lord, we bow, Our God who reigns above
And rules the world below, Boundless in pow’r and love.
Our thanks we bring In joy and praise,
Our hearts we raise To You, our King!
The nation You have blest May well Your love declare,
From foes and fears at rest, Protected by Your care,
For this bright day, For this fair land—
Gifts of Your hand— Our thanks we pay.
May ev’ry mountain height, Each vale and forest green,
Shine in Your Word’s pure light, And its rich fruits be seen!
May ev’ry tongue Be tuned to praise
And join to raise A grateful song.
Earth, hear your Maker’s voice; Your great Redeemer own;
Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone.
Cast down your pride, Your sin deplore,
And bow before The Crucified.
And when in pow’r He comes, Oh, may our native land
From all its rending tombs Send forth a glorious band,
A countless throng, With joy to sing
To heav’n’s high King Salvation’s song!
