February 2nd Daily Devotion

A SERIES OF DEVOTIONS BASED ON THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

GOD’S WORD IS CHANGELESS

Matthew 24:32-35 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

The older you are the more aware you are how the meaning of words have changed. Here are a few examples: “Nice” originally meant “ignorant or foolish,” it has evolved to mean “pleasant, kind, or agreeable.” “Silly” once referred to “happy or fortunate,” it has shifted to mean “foolish, or lacking seriousness.” “Awful” at one time meant “worthy of awe” but now means “extremely bad or unpleasant.” (Bing.com)

Because you are accustomed to the meaning of words changing, it is only reasonable since the words in the Bible are thousands of years old, it would seem many of them have changed meaning also. If that is so, then what the Bible has to say about God, wouldn’t it stand to reason that He also has changed?

Jesus said of God’s word, “. . . Thy word is truth.” David said of God’s covenant (sacred promise), “Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.” (2 Samuel 7:28) The Widow of Zarephath, after Elijah’s promised her God would provide for her and her son daily food and even brought her son back to life exclaimed, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.” (1 Kings 17:24)

Because God’s word is true, reliable, changeless, you can be certain and sure that because He has promised if you believe in His Son Jesus, you shall receive eternal life indeed you will have what He promised. His word says to you, “Whoever believes and is baptized shall be saved.” (Mark 16:16)

Prayer: Praise and thanks to You dear Father that Your words and promises to me are true, dependable, and never change. Bless me with faith to believe all You have said. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Preach you the Word and plant it home
To men who like or like it not,
The Word that shall endure and stand
When flow’rs and men shall be forgot.

We know how hard, O Lord, the task
Your servant bade us undertake:
To preach Your Word and never ask
What prideful profit it may make.

The sower sows; his reckless love
Scatters abroad the goodly seed,
Intent alone that all may have
The wholesome loaves that all men need.

Though some be snatched and some be scorched
And some be choked and matted flat,
The sower sows; his heart cries out,
“Oh, what of that, and what of that?”

Of all his scattered plenteousness
One-fourth waves ripe on hill and flat,
And bears a harvest hundredfold:
“Ah, what of that, Lord, what of that!”

Preach you the Word and plant it home
And never faith; the Harvest Lord
Who gave the sower seed to sow
Will watch and tend His planted Word.
